Expensive Grif-friend,
Final week this little theatre on the hill welcomed the Minister for the Arts, the Hon. Ben Franklin for a historic announcement: Griffin has been awarded a grant of $5 million from the NSW Authorities to redevelop the SBW Stables Theatre. That is recreation altering.
We love each inch of this treasured piece of Australian tradition—as do you! However our theatre shouldn’t be accessible. Actors and stage managers are sandwiched into back-of-house. At present, we now have no area to rehearse. There’s an inventory of issues we need to change, however you could be assured that the Stables will stay an intimate and welcoming place to inform pressing Australian tales—simply with barely comfier seats!
We had been lucky to have the Minister return this week to see Golden Blood (黄金血液) by Merlynn Tong—which solely runs for one more 10 days! Top-of-the-line elements of my job is seeing folks transported by actually sensible storytelling. If you need a way of high-drama, Singaporean-style (minus the limitless airport queues!), then come and catch this particular piece of theatre gold earlier than it closes subsequent Saturday 30 July.
Within the rehearsal room (obvs not ours!), Whitefella Yella Tree by Dylan Van Den Berg is taking form with the fantastic Callan Purcell and Man Simon and a powerful artistic group. Described as a luminous love story which packs a punch, we’re so proud this play was developed by way of our Griffin Studio program and may’t wait to share it with you in a few weeks.
Subsequent month we additionally announce the winner of the Griffin Award for 2022, generously supported by the Copyright Company’s Cultural Fund. This yr’s shortlist is a powerful line-up of very proficient playwrights together with Alistair Baldwin, Grace Chow, Tasnim Hossain, Eloise Snape and Katy Warner. Tune in on Sunday 21 August once we announce the winner (however to us, they’re all winners!).
Is it actually nearly August? I might be glad to go away this wet winter behind and welcome spring. I’m nearly prepared the buds out… however till then, I encourage you to go to this cosy little theatre and share a toast with us to a shiny future.
Love,
JC xx
