Inform us about your position in Steal a Pencil for Me.
I’m singing the position of Nazi Guard #1. It has been a particularly difficult position to tackle in some ways. The music for the Nazis could be very robotic and leaves little room for error. Rhythmically, it’s most likely a number of the most troublesome music within the opera. And to prime all of it off, clearly, my character is a Nazi, and most of my textual content is riddled with horrible traces, so the position can also be difficult mentally.
How is making ready for a recording totally different than making ready for a dwell position? How is your efficiency totally different?
Recordings rely closely on the type of sounds you produce. When approaching a dwell position, there are a lot of different components it’s worthwhile to take into account, corresponding to how you progress on stage, memorizing your music, what the character would do on this occasion, and so forth. The music doesn’t must be completely memorized however ought to be shut as a way to produce the highest quality of sound.
Recording focuses on solely the musical facet of the efficiency. You current and sing the character as you’ll on stage, however you don’t have to fret about the place try to be on stage or if a bit of costume threatens to fall off whilst you’re singing. In my preparation, I’ve realized my notes and rhythms to make them as correct as potential, however I additionally add colours to the voice—for instance, a frightened voice sounds totally different from an indignant voice, so I embrace that in my singing primarily based off what the character is saying and the scenario they’re in.
Have you ever taken half in a recording earlier than? If that’s the case. How is that this related/totally different? If not. What’s the most important shock?
Whereas I’ve taken half in recordings earlier than, this will likely be my first recording of a full opera. It’s related in the way it’s organized. We report one scene or part at a time till all of us be ok with a take. I’d say the one distinction is the size of the recording course of. In different recordings, we often had extra rehearsal time after which recorded in a day or two. This course of had a brief rehearsal interval and a protracted recording course of of 5 days. We hit the bottom operating, so to talk.
What has been your favourite a part of this expertise?
I like making music with folks. It’s at all times my favourite a part of an expertise like this. The idea of collaboration and being part of one thing greater than your self is fulfilling in and of itself.
